I love a good party. The way I figure it, life’s too short not to celebrate the good stuff. It’s so much fun to be with people — enjoying each other’s company and celebrating special people and events. Whether it’s a birthday party, a promotion at work or a holiday get-together, I’m totally in!
I really enjoy celebrating our SBX birthday each year — especially our annual Drive for Charity, where we recognize community organizations that are making a difference. We like to say it’s our birthday, but our community and customers get all the gifts. This year, we gave more than $31,000 in grants to six outstanding causes. Thanks for helping us make San Diego and the South Bay a better place for those who need our support.
With the holiday season now in full swing, we’ll all be celebrating. Let’s all have a great time as we get together with our loved ones and others. This holiday season, I’d like to ask you for a gift. Please be safe. That means no drinking and driving. No saying, “I’m just a little buzzed, I’ll be fine” then getting in the car and driving home, even if it’s just around the block. Your life and the lives of others are too precious. The risk of something bad happening just isn’t worth it. Get a ride home. Take a taxi. Volunteer to be the designated driver. Don’t let a friend drive when drunk. Please join me by going to http://buzzeddriving.adcouncil.org and taking the pledge to not drink and drive. And pass the word on. Together, let’s make this the safest holiday season ever.
All of us at SBX wish you a wonderful holiday season and best wishes for 2012. We’re committed to serving you and continuing to be your personal shortcut around the South Bay. Thank you for the gift of being our customer and trusting us with your commuting needs.
See you on the road!

Thanks to all of you who drove SBX on Friday, November 18, to support our Drive for Charity. That day, we raised just over $31,000 for five very deserving organizations: the San Diego County District Attorney Investigator’s Association Fallen Officers Fund, Chula Vista Police Activities League, East County Youth Symphony, Turning the Hearts Center and South Bay Family YMCA. Each received a $5,000 grant to help with their programs. In addition, the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista received a $6,000 grant to help train athletes for the 2012 London Olympics. We are proud to support these fine organizations on behalf of our customers.
Special thanks to SBX customers Brian Reed, Robert Chang, Richard E. Preuss, Larry Davis, Rayna Kim for nominating these outstanding organizations. As our way of saying thanks, each of these customers received a $100 gas card.
Over the past four years, our Drive for Charity has raised just under $132,000 for grants to community organizations on behalf of our SBX customers. We are proud to be part of the South Bay community and proud to support these organizations on your behalf.

Melinda Owen came to Chula Vista in 2009, moving from her hometown of Polson, Montana, to train full time at the Olympic Training Center. We were privileged to get to know Melinda recently when she served on the selection panel for our 2011 SBX Drive for Charity. As soon as we met Melinda, we could see why the U.S. Olympic Training staff picked her to help us with our selection process. She has a fantastic attitude, an infectious smile and the spirit of a true champion.

Melinda is currently training full time for the 2012 London Olympic Games, where she has her sights set on winning the gold medal in the women’s pole vault. She has been pole-vaulting since she was a teenager, excelling both in high school and at her college alma mater, the University of Idaho, where she was a 2007 NCAA All-American. Thank you, Melinda, for helping us with our Drive for Charity and for being a SBX customer. We are so proud of you and wish you all the best as you “go for the gold” at the 2012 Olympic Games. For more information and to find out about how you can support Melinda in her quest for Olympic gold, visit www.melindaowen.com.

The SBX website is getting a fresh new look and new functionality. Several months ago, we asked our customers how we could improve the SBX website. The response gave us some great ideas, including:
» Easier FasTrak® account log-in and management
» Easy-to-find Customer Service Center contact information
» An easy-to-find and use Toll Calculator
» New, "how-to" videos for opening a FasTrak account, paying by cash or credit card, or resolving toll violations
» Facebook and Twitter feeds on our homepage
The website upgrade also includes the latest security technology in order to protect your personal information.
We will be rolling out the new website in the next few weeks. Be sure to take it for a test drive and let us know what you think.

It’s great to live in San Diego! Thank goodness we don’t live back east where we have to deal with scraping snow off our windshields and driving in blizzard conditions. Even so, we still need to be extra careful driving now that winter is here in San Diego. With it getting lighter later and darker earlier, most of us are commuting to and from work in the dark. We can all make the road safer by slowing down and leaving more distance between us and the car in front of us. With the winter rains upon us, it’s also a great time to replace your windshield wipers and make sure that you have good tires. Following these simple steps will make sure that we all have a safer driving experience this winter. This holiday season, SDG&E is continuing their very own holiday tradition by giving their customers the opportunity to exchange up to three strands of holiday lights for energy-efficient, multi-colored LED holiday lights. The LED lights shine brighter, last up to 100 times longer than the normal incandescent holiday lights and save households money on their energy bills by using 90% less energy. SDG&E’s LED Holiday Light Exchange is one of the county’s most popular and well-attended events, and this year’s remaining exchange locations include Balboa Park during December Nights (Dec. 2 & 3), Chula Vista at Memorial Park before the Starlight Parade (Dec. 3) and Escondido at the California Center for the arts from 1 – 5 PM (Dec. 4). All the public needs to do is bring old lights, a present copy of an SDG&E bill or California ID. For more information on how to get your free holiday lights, visit sdge.com/leds.
