My parents taught me that when you receive a gift, you follow up with a thank-you note to the person who gave it to you. This newsletter, I want to say thank you to those who recently gave us the gift of your feedback. Some of you participated in customer roundtables where we talked about your experience on South Bay ExpresswaySM and your recommendations for improvement. Others participated in our recent telephone survey. Your feedback and suggestions are truly a gift – a gift certainly worthy of a big thank you.
We learned that the most important thing to you is having a fast and reliable commute. You give us high marks (94%) on meeting your expectations as well as high marks on safety and the beauty of the roadway. As to improvement, we learned that we can do a better job of communicating our toll schedule and account policies to you. We were pleased to learn that when given the choice of using South Bay Expressway or an alternate route, you chose South Bay Expressway more often than not. That makes us feel good, particularly during these times when value is important and every dollar counts. It was interesting to talk to and hear from so many of you who said that, in addition to saving time, the gas that you save from taking South Bay Expressway versus the long way around offsets the cost of your toll. Again, thank you for your feedback. We are your local toll road, and we pledge to continue to improve your experience with us.

We've Extended Customer Service Center Hours
While you can do almost everything relating to your FasTrak account online or over the phone, some customers prefer to visit us at our Customer Service Center in Otay Mesa. For your convenience, we’ve extended the hours of operation for walk-in customers from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. As always, our Customer Service Center can be reached from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. over the phone and you can access your account online 24/7!

Refer-A-Friend is back! That’s right. You can get $25 in free tolls just for passing on the word about South Bay Expressway and FasTrak ®.
From now through the end of 2010, Refer-A-Friend and we’ll give you $25 in South Bay Expressway toll credits for each friend who opens a South Bay Expressway FasTrak account. Oh, and when your friend opens their FasTrak account, we’ll also give them 1 week of unlimited FREE driving on South Bay. Better yet, there’s no limit. Your can refer as many friends as you like and get $25 in toll credits each time!
We recently e-mailed you a special code number that is associated with your FasTrak account. Don't worry - if you forgot your code, just call us at 619-661-7070 to retrieve it. Forward the e-mail, call, fax or even Facebook your friends that code. When they stop by or call in to open their account (sorry, no Web sign-ups), all they need to do is give us your code number. When their account has been open for 60 days, you’ll receive $25 in free toll credits automatically.

No More "Little Dipper"
If you commute from East County and enter SBX from the westbound SR-125 to the southbound SBX ramp, you likely experienced that little “whoop-de-do” that some of our customers referred to as “the little dipper.” While some customers liked it, it’s not exactly what we had in mind when we promised to put the fun back in driving. Well, no more rollercoaster rides! We’ve patched the transition to keep your drive smooth and stress-free. Enjoy!
SBX Cares Scholarships Awarded
Another school year has passed, and another graduating class has made it! Congratulations to all graduates, whether from kindergarten to first grade, eighth grade to high school, high school to higher education or beyond. You have much to be proud of!
We’re especially proud of three local teens who were recently awarded $1,000 SBX Cares Scholarships. Each of these young people impressed us with their commitment to the community, involvement in student activities, their academic record and their drive to continue their education. Best of luck to you all – a new chapter has begun!

Summer Driving Tips
Jumping in the car to hit the beach, catch a ball game, take a road trip or enjoy the sunshine around town seems like no big deal, right? Well, it is! During this time of the year, when there are more drivers out there, be sure your vehicle is in tip-top shape before buckling up and hitting the road!
- Take a few moments to inspect your tires. Having properly inflated tires keeps your fuel efficiency where it should be. And don’t forget to check the tread too. If either of these look like they need help – drive to your local tire service center for some assistance from professionals!
- Replace your air filter as needed. This can improve your vehicle’s gas mileage – and also helps protect your engine from impurities.
- Update your credit/debit card information as soon as possible when you receive a new credit/debit card if your current one becomes lost or stolen.
- Pack only what you need. Carrying extra weight around in your car can reduce your fuel economy. Check your owner’s manual for the maximum recommended load details.
- Keep your vehicle properly tuned. Regular maintenance can improve gas mileage by an average of 4.1 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
- Always make sure your gas cap is on tight and that it is not damaged in order to prevent gas from vaporizing into the atmosphere.
- Watch your speed. Aggressive driving and speeding wastes gas – and it’s dangerous. Always drive safely, and obey the posted speed limits.

The FasTrak clip uses small suction cups to affix to the inside of your windshield – making an easily movable holder for your transponders.
